James Challis

He even got to be the boss of a big building called the Cambridge Observatory, where he used giant telescopes to explore the universe. He was like a detective for the stars!

One of the most exciting things James Challis did was look for new planets. In 1846, scientists thought there might be a planet hiding far away. James was watching the sky very carefully, and he actually saw this new planet!

But, he was so busy with other science experiments that he didn't realize how important his sighting was. He didn't announce it right away, and another scientist got the credit for discovering it first. Oops!

James Challis wasn't just looking at stars. He was a physicist, which means he studied how the world works. He investigated all sorts of cool things, like light and sound and how things move. Even though he missed out on discovering a planet, his work helped other scientists understand more about the universe.
