Jack Swigert

Imagine a super-smart pilot who loved flying! That was Jack Swigert. He was an astronaut, which means he got to fly in rockets way up into space. He was also a test pilot, meaning he flew new airplanes to make sure they were safe. Jack was part of a very special team that flew to the Moon! He was born a long, long time ago, in 1931, and he loved exploring.

Jack Swigert was on a mission called Apollo 13. It was supposed to land on the Moon, but something went wrong! Instead of landing, the spaceship had to zoom around the Moon like a slingshot to get back home safely. This meant Jack and his friends flew farther away from Earth than anyone ever had before or since! It was a very exciting, but also a little scary, adventure.

On the Apollo 13 mission, Jack Swigert and his crew flew so far from Earth that they were like tiny specks in the giant universe. They used the Moon's gravity to swing them back home, which is called a 'slingshot' maneuver. This trip was so fast and far that it's still the farthest anyone has ever traveled away from our planet.

It's like running around a playground really, really fast to get to the other side!

After his amazing space adventures, Jack Swigert did other cool things. He was a politician, which means he tried to help make important decisions for people. He even ran for a job in the government called the Senate. Even though he got sick later, he still won an election to go to Congress, but sadly, he passed away before he could start his new job. He was a busy and brave person!
