Irish Dance

Key Facts
What's All the Hopping About?
Irish dance is like a super fun game of foot-tapping! It's a special kind of dancing that comes from Ireland. People dance it for parties, competitions, and even on big stages. Imagine dancing with your feet moving so fast they look like a blur! That's part of the magic of Irish dance. It's a way for people to share stories and have fun with their bodies.
A Long, Long Time Ago!
This dance is super old, like, older than your grandparents' grandparents! It started a very, very long time ago in Ireland. Back then, travelling teachers called 'dance masters' would teach people new steps. Different parts of Ireland had their own special ways of dancing. It was so important that it even became a way for Irish people to show they were proud of their country.
Super Speedy Feet!
The most famous kind of Irish dance is called 'stepdance'. It's known for dancers keeping their upper bodies super still, like statues, while their feet do all the amazing work! Their feet move so fast, it's like a drum solo happening on the floor. Some dances are done all by yourself, and others are done with friends in cool patterns.
Dancing with Friends!
There are also group dances where lots of people dance together. One is called 'Ceili' (say KAY-lee), where you dance with 2 to 16 people! You make shapes and move around the floor together. Another is 'Set dance', usually with four people, where the footwork can be tricky, just like in stepdance. It's all about moving together and having a great time!
