Hydrofoil

Have you ever seen a boat zoom across the water? Some boats are extra special because they have hidden wings called hydrofoils! When the boat goes fast, these wings lift the whole boat up, so it's not even touching the water. It's like the boat is flying on top of the waves! This makes them go much, much faster than regular boats.

Think about how an airplane's wings work to lift it into the sky. Hydrofoils work in a very similar way, but they are underwater! As the boat speeds up, the water flows over the hydrofoils. This flow creates a lifting force, just like air over an airplane's wing. This force is so strong it can lift the heavy boat hull right out of the water!

Because hydrofoils lift the boat's body out of the water, there's much less drag, which is like resistance. Imagine trying to run through water – it's hard! But if you could somehow float above it, it would be much easier. Hydrofoils make boats glide through the water with less effort, allowing them to reach amazing speeds. They can be faster than many other types of boats.

You might see hydrofoils carrying people across lakes or oceans. They are often used as ferries to get people from one place to another quickly. Some are used for racing, where their speed is a big advantage. They are a cool example of how clever engineering can make transportation faster and more exciting.
