Hurricane Claudette (2003)

Imagine a giant, swirling storm that's bigger than your whole town! That was Hurricane Claudette in 2003. It started as a tiny spark of weather way out in the ocean and grew into a big, strong hurricane. It was like a super-powered wind machine that traveled across the water and then decided to visit Texas!

Claudette didn't just pop up overnight! It began as a little weather disturbance and then traveled super fast. It zipped past a place called the Yucatán Peninsula, which is like a big pointy finger of land. Then, it zoomed across the Gulf of Mexico, getting bigger and stronger, until it was ready to say hello to Texas!

Even though Claudette wasn't the biggest hurricane ever, it was still important! It was the first hurricane to hit the United States in July in a long time. It brought strong winds that shook things up and even made the beaches a little bit smaller. Because it caused some trouble, the President even declared parts of Texas a special disaster area to help people.

Hurricanes are like giant spinning tops powered by warm ocean water. When warm, moist air rises, it creates clouds and rain. As more warm air rises, the storm spins faster and faster, like a merry-go-round picking up speed. Claudette used the warm water in the Gulf of Mexico to get its super strength!
