Huaso

Imagine a super skilled rider from Chile, like a cowboy but with their own special style! That's a Huaso. They are country people who are experts with horses. They live all over the middle and southern parts of Chile. Sometimes people call them 'Chilean cowboys'. They are a big part of Chilean parties and celebrations, especially when they dance the 'cueca'!

Huasos have a very cool look! They wear a special straw hat called a 'chupalla'. Over their clothes, they wear a warm poncho, which can be called a 'manta' or a 'chamanto'. They also wear a short jacket and special leather leggings over their boots. And get this, their boots have big spurs with round, spiky wheels that are as big as a cookie! It's a very distinctive outfit.

Huasos are amazing riders. They spend a lot of time on horseback, taking care of farms and animals. Did you know that a female Huaso is called a 'Huasa'? But often, the wife or girlfriend of a Huaso is called a 'china'. You can see her beautiful dress when they dance the 'cueca'. Sometimes, the word 'huaso' is used to describe someone who isn't very polite, but that's not the real Huaso! The real Huaso is a proud and skilled horseman.
