Meet Algeria's Leader!
Houari Boumédiène was a very important person in the country of Algeria. He was born Mohammed ben Brahim Boukharouba, but he chose a new name, Houari Boumédiène, when he joined a special group called the National Liberation Front. This group worked hard to make Algeria an independent country, free from other countries ruling it.
Boumédiène was like a captain for their army, helping them win their fight for freedom. After Algeria became free, he became the leader of the whole country and stayed in charge for a long time, until he passed away.
From Soldier to President!
When Algeria was fighting for its independence, Houari Boumédiène was a brave soldier. He was so good at leading that he became the commander of the army that was fighting for freedom. After the country won its independence, he became the Minister of Defense, which is like the boss of all the soldiers.
But he wanted to be in charge of the whole country, so he became the leader. He made big changes, like creating a new constitution, which is like the rulebook for a country. He was the leader for many years, guiding Algeria as it grew.
A Leader Who Helped Others!
Houari Boumédiène was a leader who believed in helping other countries too. He supported people in other parts of the world who were also fighting to be free. He was also very against Israel.
He wanted Algeria to be a strong and independent country. He made sure Algeria had its own rules and government. He even helped bring back important parts of the government, like a parliament, which is a place where people discuss and make laws.
He was a very determined leader for Algeria.
A Big Farewell!
Towards the end of his life, Houari Boumédiène wasn't seen in public as much. He became sick with a rare illness. Sadly, he passed away in 1978.
But so many people loved him and were sad to see him go! Two million people came to his funeral, which is more people than live in some big cities! It shows how much he meant to the people of Algeria.
After he was gone, another leader named Chadli Bendjedid took his place.
