Hitchhiker Program

The Hitchhiker Program was like a special taxi service for small science experiments in space! Instead of building a whole giant rocket for just one little experiment, scientists could send their tiny projects along for a ride on bigger rockets that were already going to space. This made exploring space much easier and cheaper for lots of different science ideas.

Long ago, sending anything to space was super expensive. Scientists had lots of cool ideas for experiments, but they couldn't always afford to send them. So, NASA, the space agency, came up with the Hitchhiker Program.

It was like saying, 'Hey, if you have a small experiment, you can hop on our rocket for a small fee!' This started in the 1970s and helped many scientists get their ideas into space.

The Hitchhiker Program used special containers that could hold these small experiments. These containers would be attached to bigger rockets, like a backpack on a person. When the big rocket reached space, the Hitchhiker container would be released to do its job. It was a clever way to use space travel efficiently, like carpooling to school!
