Heat Wave

A heat wave is like a super long, super hot day that just keeps going and going! It's when the weather gets much hotter than usual for a really long time, like many days in a row. It's not just a little warm, it's really warm, hotter than you'd expect for that time of year. Sometimes, places that are usually cool can feel like a desert during a heat wave!

How does it get so hot? Imagine a giant, invisible blanket in the sky called a high-pressure area. This blanket sits over a place and traps all the warm air underneath, like a lid on a pot. The sun keeps shining, and the heat can't escape, making everything super toasty for days, or even weeks!

When it gets too hot for too long, it can cause problems. Plants might get thirsty and dry, and it can be hard for people and animals to stay cool. Sometimes, too many people turn on air conditioners, which can make the electricity go out! It's important to stay safe and drink lots of water when the weather is this hot.

Because heat waves can be tough, grown-ups try to predict them. They can tell us when a heat wave is coming so we can be prepared. This means finding cool places to go, like the library or a splash pad, and drinking plenty of water. Staying safe and cool is the most important thing during these super hot spells.
