It impairs immune function, making individuals more vulnerable to infections and potentially hindering the body's ability to fight off existing diseases. Furthermore, tobacco use is linked to reproductive health issues, including infertility, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and erectile dysfunction. It accelerates skin aging, contributes to vision loss (e.g., macular degeneration, cataracts), and negatively impacts bone health, increasing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures.
The Global Burden and Public Health Imperative
Globally, tobacco use remains one of the leading preventable causes of premature death and disease. The World Health Organization estimates that tobacco kills more than 8 million people each year, with a significant portion of these deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries where tobacco control measures may be less robust. The economic costs associated with tobacco-related illnesses, including healthcare expenditures and lost productivity, are staggering.
Addressing this public health crisis requires comprehensive strategies, including strong tobacco control policies (e.g., taxation, smoke-free environments, advertising bans), cessation support programs, and public education campaigns to raise awareness about the severe health risks associated with all forms of tobacco consumption, including e-cigarettes and smokeless tobacco.
