Hailemariam Desalegn

Hailemariam Desalegn was a very important person in Ethiopia, a country in Africa. He was like the captain of a big ship, guiding the country for six years. Before that, he was like the first mate, helping the previous captain. He was born a long time ago, in 1965, and grew up to make big choices for millions of people.

Sometimes, even leaders decide it's time for a change. In 2018, Hailemariam Desalegn decided to step down from being the leader. This was a big deal because most leaders in Ethiopia's history either stayed in power until they passed away or were removed. He wanted to let new ideas come in, like when a new student joins your class and brings fresh thoughts!

Guess what? Hailemariam Desalegn didn't just lead Ethiopia! For one whole year, from 2013 to 2014, he was also in charge of the African Union. This is like being the president of a club that has 55 countries in it! It means he had to listen to leaders from all over Africa and help them work together.

When Hailemariam Desalegn decided to resign, he said it was to make way for new ideas and changes. Think about when your teacher lets students share their own ways of solving a math problem. He believed that stepping down would help Ethiopia move forward. It showed that sometimes, the bravest thing a leader can do is let someone else take the wheel.
