Their nomenclature itself is a testament to their digital roots, derived from a specific iteration of the Pepe the Frog internet meme, a symbol that has been co-opted by various online subcultures. This group is characterized by its fluid definition, encompassing followers, fans, and associates of Fuentes.

Their primary objective is to infiltrate and influence mainstream conservatism within the United States, employing a multifaceted strategy that includes online engagement and direct action. The movement's ideology is often described as 'America First,' emphasizing national interests and a particular vision of American identity, which has led to their involvement in significant political events, including the January 6th Capitol attack and related protests.

The formative period of the Groyper movement, particularly the events dubbed 'The Groyper War,' began in the autumn of 2019. This campaign was strategically launched by Nick Fuentes, targeting the 'Culture War' college tour organized by Turning Point USA, a prominent conservative youth organization led by Charlie Kirk. The impetus for this campaign reportedly stemmed from the dismissal of an ally of Fuentes and broader political disagreements.

Groypers actively disrupted these college events by posing pointed and often provocative questions concerning immigration policy, the relationship with Israel, and LGBTQ+ rights. The intention was to challenge and expose perceived ideological inconsistencies within mainstream conservative figures such as Kirk, Donald Trump Jr., and Ben Shapiro, whom they collectively labeled 'Conservative Inc.' This tactic proved effective in generating media attention and highlighting internal divisions within the conservative ecosystem, notably after a November 2019 UCLA event where Groyper heckling led to Donald Trump Jr.'s speech being prematurely concluded.

The Groyper movement is defined by a set of ideologies that have drawn significant criticism and condemnation. It has been widely described as homophobic, racist, nativist, fascist, sexist, antisemitic, and Islamophobic. These labels reflect concerns about the group's stance on social issues, minority groups, and immigration.

The movement is also characterized as 'accelerationist,' suggesting a belief that societal collapse is desirable to bring about radical change. Critics argue that the Groypers represent an attempt to rebrand or revitalize the alt-right movement, adapting its core tenets for a new generation of online activists. In August 2024, Fuentes initiated 'Groyper War 2,' a digital campaign aimed at pressuring Donald Trump's presidential campaign.
