Gristmill

A gristmill is like a special machine or a building that helps us make flour from grains, like wheat or corn. It separates the tasty inside part of the grain from its outer shell, called chaff. Think of it like getting the yummy cookie dough out of its wrapper! This flour is super important because it's used to make bread, cakes, and many other delicious foods we eat every day.

Inside a gristmill, there are usually big, heavy stones. One stone spins around on top of another stone that stays still. As the grain is poured in between them, the spinning stone crushes it into smaller pieces. This process turns the hard grain into soft flour. Sometimes, water wheels or windmills were used to make the stones spin, which is a very clever way to use nature's power!
