Gorgoneion

A Gorgoneion is a special picture of a face, usually a scary one! It looks like it has snakes for hair and a big, wide mouth. People in ancient Greece thought this image was super powerful. They believed it could scare away bad guys and protect them from danger. So, they put these faces on all sorts of things, like armor, pots, and even buildings. It was like a magical shield made of art!

This spooky face comes from a myth about three sisters called the Gorgons. The most famous Gorgon was named Medusa. She had snakes for hair and a stare so fierce it could turn people to stone! Later, a hero named Perseus chopped off Medusa's head. But her scary face lived on as a symbol. People started making pictures of it, called Gorgoneions, to get some of that protective power for themselves.
