Key Facts
What Was the German Reich?
The German Reich was like a big German family that lived together in one country for a long, long time, from 1871 to 1945. It wasn't always called the 'German Reich.' Sometimes it was called the 'German Empire' or even the 'Greater German Reich' when it got bigger! Think of it like a house that you keep adding rooms to. The people inside were always German, but the size of the house changed.
Where Did It Start?
This big German country officially began in a fancy palace called Versailles, in France, on a very specific day: January 18, 1871. Two important leaders, Otto von Bismarck and Wilhelm I, announced it to everyone. It was like the grand opening of a giant new playground that everyone in Germany could enjoy. Later, the country grew even bigger when it included Austria.
When Did It End?
The German Reich's story came to an end in 1945, the same year World War II finished. It was like the playground closing down. The leaders of other countries decided that the German Reich wouldn't be a country anymore. They took control of the land and made sure it wouldn't be called the German Reich again. It was a big change for everyone.
A New Beginning!
Even though the German Reich stopped being called that, the German people and their land didn't disappear! After a little while, they started a new country called the Federal Republic of Germany. It's like taking the best parts of the old playground and building a brand new one, but with a different name and new rules. They still remember the German Reich, but they are a new country now.
