Meet Franz, the Music Whiz!

Franz Schubert was a super-talented musician who lived a long, long time ago in Austria. He was born in 1797, which is even before your grandparents' grandparents were born! Even though he didn't live very long, he wrote SO much music. Think of it like a giant box overflowing with beautiful songs and melodies. He was like a music-writing machine, creating tunes that still make people happy today.

From a Young Age, He Was Amazing!

Franz started playing music when he was just a little kid, about your age! His dad taught him the violin, and his brother taught him the piano. But guess what?

Franz got so good, so fast, that he soon knew more than them! By the time he was eleven, he was already going to a special school where he learned about music from famous composers like Mozart. He loved it so much he kept writing music even when he was supposed to be studying to be a teacher!

His Music is Like Magic!

Franz wrote over 600 songs called 'Lieder' (say: LEE-der), which are like little musical stories. He also wrote big, grand symphonies, which are like musical adventures for an orchestra. Some of his most famous tunes are 'Ave Maria' (which sounds super peaceful) and 'Erlkönig' (which is a dramatic story song).

He even wrote a symphony called 'Unfinished' because he died before he could finish it! Isn't that wild?

Why We Still Love His Tunes!

Even though Franz died when he was only 31, his music lived on! Other famous musicians discovered his songs and symphonies after he was gone and told everyone how wonderful they were. Today, people all over the world still listen to Franz Schubert's music.

It's played in concerts and used in movies because it's so beautiful and can make you feel all sorts of emotions, from happy to a little bit sad.
