Engagement

Imagine you and your best friend promise to build the coolest fort together next summer. Engagement is a bit like that, but for grown-ups! It's the time between when someone asks to get married and when they actually have their wedding. During this time, they are called 'engaged'. It's like a special waiting period filled with excitement and planning for a big day.

A super long time ago, parents sometimes decided who their children would marry, even when the children were very, very young. They would make a promise, or 'betrothal', for them. This could mean they were promised to each other for many, many years before they even met or were old enough to think about getting married. It's very different from how most people get engaged today!

Being engaged is important because it's a public promise that two people plan to spend their lives together. It's a time to get to know each other even better and prepare for marriage. In some traditions, there are special ceremonies to bless this promise, like a special 'yes' in front of friends and family, or even in a church, to show everyone they are serious about their future together.

When people are engaged, they start planning their wedding! This can include choosing a date, finding a place, and inviting guests. They might also be called 'fiancés'. It's a time for them to make sure they are ready for married life. Sometimes, the engagement can be short, like a few months, and sometimes it can be longer, depending on what the couple wants and what's usual in their culture.
