Lingfield - July 2010 - Family Candid - Marching to the Beat of a Different Drummer

Key Facts
Meet the Beat Makers!
Drummers are super cool musicians who play drums to make music! They are like the heartbeat of a band, keeping everyone in time. Imagine a song without a beat – it would be a little lost! Drummers use special sticks to hit drums and cymbals, making all sorts of awesome sounds. Some drummers play a big set of drums called a drum kit, which has many different parts to hit.
Where Did the Drums Come From?
People have been drumming for a very, very long time, even before there were fancy drum kits! Long ago, people used drums made from animal skins stretched over hollow logs. They would hit them with their hands or sticks to send messages, celebrate, or tell stories.
Today, drummers still use individual drums in many countries, but the drum kit is a modern invention that lets one person play many sounds at once!
Why Drummers Rock!
Drummers are super important because they hold the music together! They provide the rhythm, which is like the steady pulse of a song. This helps singers and other musicians know when to play their parts. Without a drummer, a band might sound messy. Drummers also add exciting fills and solos that make songs more interesting and fun to listen to. They are the energy behind the music!
Drummer's Awesome Tools!
A drummer's drum kit is like a giant musical playground! It has big drums called toms, a loud snare drum, and a booming bass drum that’s played with a foot pedal. There are also shiny cymbals that crash, shimmer, and sizzle. Drummers use sticks, brushes, or even their hands to create different sounds. Some drummers have special pedals for their feet to play the bass drum even faster!
