Who Was Brave Sailor Doris?

Imagine a sailor named Doris Miller. He was a cook on a giant Navy ship called the USS West Virginia. On a sunny Sunday morning, everything changed. Suddenly, bombs started falling from the sky! It was a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Doris, who was usually busy making food, jumped into action to help his friends.

Helping Friends When Danger Struck!

Even though Doris was a cook and not trained to fight, he was incredibly brave. He helped carry his injured shipmates to safety, away from the danger. Then, he saw a big gun that shot down airplanes. Even though he'd never used one before, Doris climbed up and started firing at the enemy planes to protect his ship and his country!

A Special Medal for a Hero!

Doris Miller was so courageous that he received a very special award called the Navy Cross. It's like getting a gold star for being super brave! Many people thought he deserved an even bigger award, the Medal of Honor, because he was so heroic. He was the first Black sailor to ever get the Navy Cross, which was a really big deal.

A Hero's Story Continues

Sadly, Doris Miller's life was cut short when another ship he was on was attacked later in the war. But his bravery at Pearl Harbor was never forgotten. He showed everyone that no matter your job, you can be a hero when you stand up and help others. His story inspires us to be brave and helpful, too.
