The Declaration of Arbroath: A Letter to the Pope!

Once upon a time, a long, long time ago, Scotland was having a big fight with England. England wanted to rule Scotland, but the Scottish people really, really wanted to be free! So, some brave Scottish leaders wrote a special letter.

This letter was called the Declaration of Arbroath. It was written in a language called Latin, which was like a secret code for grown-ups back then. They sent it all the way to the Pope, who was like the most important person in the church at that time.

They wanted him to know that Scotland was its own country and wanted to stay that way!

This super important letter wasn't written by just one person. It was signed by 51 brave Scottish lords and knights! They were all very important people who loved Scotland.

They gathered at a place called Arbroath Abbey, which was like a big, old stone church. The main person who helped write it was probably a smart guy named Bernard. He was like the head of the church in Arbroath and also a very important advisor to the King.

They all put their special wax seals on the letter to show they agreed with every word.

Sending a letter to the Pope was a HUGE deal back then! The Pope had a lot of power, and the Scottish leaders hoped he would listen to them. They wanted him to tell England to stop trying to take over Scotland.

The letter explained that Scotland had been a free country for a very, very long time, even before England was a big country! They said they would fight to stay free, no matter what. It was like them saying, 'We are strong and independent, and you can't boss us around!'

Even though this letter was written in 1320, not many people knew about it for hundreds of years! It was like a secret treasure that was hidden away. For a long, long time, historians didn't even mention it.

It wasn't until much later, around the time when people were getting excited about new ideas, that someone found the letter and printed it. Then, people started to understand how important it was. It showed everyone that Scotland had always believed in being free and independent!
