Dar es Salaam is a super big city in Africa, in a country called Tanzania. Its name means 'Home of Peace' in a language called Arabic. It's right on the edge of the big Indian Ocean, where you can see ships and boats sailing by.
This city is so important that it's the biggest city in all of East Africa, and it's growing faster than almost any other city in the world! It's like a giant playground that keeps getting bigger and bigger!
A City Born in a Hurry!
Dar es Salaam is a pretty young city, it started being built around the middle of the 1800s. It quickly became a very important place for people to trade and for leaders to make decisions. For a long time, it was the main center for a big area called German East Africa, and later Tanganyika and Tanzania.
Even though it's not the capital city anymore, it's still the most important place for money, art, and fun in Tanzania!

Can you imagine a city with more people than all the kids in your whole school district, and then some? Dar es Salaam has over 7 million people! That's more people than live in many countries!
It's a place where you can find amazing art, cool movies, and exciting music. It's also a huge center for business, where lots of important decisions are made. It's a city that never stops buzzing with energy!
Where the Ocean Meets the City
Dar es Salaam is located right on the beautiful Swahili coast, next to the sparkling Indian Ocean. This means it has lovely beaches and a busy harbor. The city is made up of different parts, like neighborhoods in your town, but they have fun names like Kinondoni, Ilala, Ubungo, Temeke, and Kigamboni. It's a place where people from all over come to live, work, and create wonderful things.
