D. S. Senanayake

Imagine a country that used to be ruled by faraway kings and queens. D. S.

Senanayake was a super important person who helped his home, Sri Lanka, become a free country! He was born a long, long time ago, in 1883, and he grew up to be a leader who cared a lot about his people. He worked hard to make sure everyone had a good life and that Sri Lanka could make its own decisions.

He was like the captain of a ship, guiding it to a safe harbor.

Before D. S. Senanayake became a big leader, Sri Lanka was called Ceylon and was part of the British Empire.

This meant people from Britain were in charge. But D. S.

Senanayake and many others wanted their country to be independent. He was a farmer and a businessman, but he also loved his country so much that he became a politician. He helped write new rules for Sri Lanka and worked with others to plan for the future.

It was like building a brand-new playground, and he helped decide where all the swings and slides should go!

D. S. Senanayake is famous because he was the very first Prime Minister of Sri Lanka when it became an independent country in 1948.

This means he was the top leader, chosen by the people of Sri Lanka to guide them. He helped start many new things, like building dams for water and encouraging people to grow more food. He wanted Sri Lanka to be strong and self-sufficient, meaning it could take care of itself.

He was a true hero for his nation!

One of the coolest things D. S. Senanayake did was focus on farming and making sure people had enough to eat.

He believed that a strong country starts with strong farms. He helped build big projects, like dams, that brought water to dry lands so more crops could grow. He also wanted to make sure everyone had jobs and a good life.

He worked until he was quite old, passing away in 1952, still dedicated to his country's progress. His work laid the foundation for the Sri Lanka we know today.
