Compact Disc

Key Facts
Meet the Shiny Music Circle!
Imagine a super shiny, flat circle, about as big as your hand! That’s a compact disc, or CD. It’s like a magic coaster that can hold lots and lots of music, or even games and stories.
When you put it in a special player, it spins super fast, and a tiny light reads all the secret information stored on it to play your favorite songs. It was a really popular way to listen to music before phones could do it all!
Where Did These Shiny Circles Come From?
A long, long time ago, in 1982, two big companies called Philips and Sony decided to make a new way to listen to music. They wanted something better than scratchy records or tapes that could get tangled. So, they invented the CD!
It was like a super-powered upgrade. At first, they were mostly for music, but soon people figured out they could store computer games and other cool stuff on them too. Millions and millions of CDs were made!
Why CDs Were So Cool!
CDs were amazing because the music sounded super clear, with no crackles or pops like old records. Plus, you could jump to any song you wanted instantly! You didn't have to fast-forward or rewind. A standard CD could hold about 74 minutes of music, which is longer than many movies! Some even held up to 80 minutes. That’s a lot of your favorite songs all on one little disc.
How the Magic Happens!
How does a CD hold so much? It’s covered in tiny, tiny bumps and flat spots that are too small to see. A special laser beam inside the CD player reads these bumps and flat spots as it spins. It’s like reading a secret code! This code tells the player which notes to play and in what order. The player then turns that code into the music you hear. It’s a super clever way to store sound!
