Key Facts
What Did Romans Wear?
Romans wore simple clothes called tunics. Boys and men wore short tunics that ended at their knees. Girls and women wore longer tunics that reached their feet. These tunics were like comfy t-shirts and dresses for them! They were usually made of soft linen, a plant that made strong thread.
Fancy Clothes for Special Days!
When Romans wanted to look extra special, they wore other clothes. Grown-up men who were citizens could wear a big, draped cloth called a toga over their tunic. Married women wore a long dress called a stola, and a special cloak called a palla on top. These clothes showed everyone they were important!
Colors and Sparkles!
Romans loved colors! They used special dyes to make their clothes bright yellow or a super fancy purple. Even though some dyes were expensive, most Romans wore colorful clothes. Wearing clean, bright clothes showed they were respectable people. They also used shiny brooches to hold their cloaks, like cool pins!
Shoes for Every Roman!
Romans wore all sorts of shoes. In the cities, they wore sandals, slippers, or boots. Imagine wearing flip-flops or sneakers, but Roman style! In the countryside, some people even wore wooden clogs, like clunky shoes. Everyone needed shoes to protect their feet, whether they were walking on city streets or country paths.
