Climate variability and change

Imagine you're wearing a raincoat today because it's raining. That's weather! It's what's happening outside right now.

Climate is like your whole wardrobe. It's the average weather over a very, very long time, like what kind of clothes you usually need for each season. Climate variability means these averages can change a little bit, like if one summer is hotter than usual.

Climate change means these changes last for many, many years, making the whole wardrobe different!

Our planet gets most of its energy from the sun, like a giant heater. Earth also sends some of this energy back out into space. This is called Earth's energy budget.

If Earth takes in more energy than it sends out, it gets warmer, like when you're under a cozy blanket. If it sends out more energy, it gets cooler. Sometimes, things like volcanoes erupting or changes in the sun can mess with this energy game, making our climate change.

Sometimes, the climate changes all by itself because of natural things happening inside Earth's systems. Think of the oceans, which are HUGE! Big ocean currents can shift and move heat around, like a giant, slow-motion water slide. These natural changes can make some places warmer or cooler for many years. It's like the Earth has its own internal rhythm that can speed up or slow down.

When the climate changes, it can affect everything! Sea levels can rise, which is like a bathtub filling up too high. Plants and animals might find it hard to live in their usual homes. It can even change how we live, affecting the food we grow and the places we can build our homes. Understanding these changes helps us take care of our amazing planet.
