Chorobates

The Chorobates was like a super-duper ruler from a long, long time ago, used by builders in Roman times. It was a big wooden beam, about as long as a small car, with two legs holding it up. It had special strings with weights on the ends, called plumb lines, hanging down from each side.

If the strings lined up perfectly, it meant the beam was super straight and level. It was a clever way to make sure buildings and bridges were built just right!
