A Rule for Who Could Visit!

Long ago, in 1882, America made a special rule called the Chinese Exclusion Act. This law was like a big 'no entry' sign for Chinese workers who wanted to come to America to live and work. It was the first time America ever said that people from one whole country couldn't come here. This law lasted for a very long time, making it hard for many Chinese people to start new lives in America.

Why Did They Want to Come?

Many people from China came to America because their home country was having big problems, like not enough food and wars. They hoped to find jobs and a safer life. Some came to help build big things, like the first railroad that went all the way across America! But as more people arrived, some Americans started to feel worried and didn't want them here.

A Law That Changed Everything

This law was a really big deal because it was the first time America decided to stop an entire group of people from coming based on where they were from. It made it super hard for Chinese people already in America to become citizens or even bring their families over. It was like a locked door that was very difficult to open.

Did It Last Forever?

Nope! The Chinese Exclusion Act was supposed to be for 10 years, but it kept getting longer and stronger. Finally, after many, many years, in 1943, America realized it was unfair and got rid of the law. It took a long time, but eventually, Chinese people were allowed to come to America again.
