Key Facts
Where is the Deepest Hole Ever?
Challenger Deep is like the ultimate secret hiding spot at the bottom of the ocean! It's way, way down in the western Pacific Ocean, in a super long crack called the Mariana Trench. Think of it as the deepest part of a giant underwater canyon. It's so deep that if you dropped a skyscraper down there, the top would still be underwater!
Who Found This Amazing Place?
Long ago, brave explorers on ships named HMS Challenger and HMS Challenger II sailed the seas. They used special tools to measure how deep the ocean was. In 1960, even braver people in a special submarine called the Trieste went all the way down to the very bottom! It was like going to the moon, but underwater!
What's it Like Down There?
It's super dark because no sunlight can reach that far down. It's also very, very cold and the water pressure is so strong it would squish a regular submarine like a soda can! Even though it's so tough, scientists think tiny little creatures might live there. It's a mysterious and exciting place that makes us wonder what else is hidden in our oceans.
How Deep is REALLY Deep?
Challenger Deep is about 11 kilometers (or almost 7 miles) deep! That's deeper than Mount Everest is tall. If you stacked about 30 school buses on top of each other, that would be about the depth of Challenger Deep. It's a mind-bogglingly deep place that scientists are still learning about.
