Chain boat navigation on the Main

Long, long ago, from 1886 to 1936, special boats called chain boats traveled on the Main River. These weren't ordinary boats! They had a secret superpower: a giant chain laid at the bottom of the river.

The boats would grab onto this chain and pull themselves upstream, like a tug-of-war with the river itself. They could even pull other boats, called barges, along with them. It was a clever way to move things up the river when there were no engines to help.

It was like a clever game of follow the leader! The chain boat would hook onto a long chain that was stretched all the way along the riverbed. Then, the boat's engine would turn a special wheel, pulling the chain.

As the chain moved, the boat moved with it, inching its way upstream. Think of it like a bicycle chain, but for a giant boat! This meant they didn't need horses to pull them anymore, which was a big change.

These chain boats were super important because they helped people move heavy things like goods and supplies up the Main River. Before these boats, people used horses to pull boats, which was slow and tiring. The chain boats made moving things much faster and easier.

They were like the delivery trucks of their time, making sure everything got where it needed to go along the river. This helped towns and cities grow!

Even though chain boats were amazing, they eventually stopped working. As more bridges and locks were built on the river, it became harder for the chain boats to get around. Also, new, faster boats with propellers and engines were invented.

These new boats could go even faster and were cheaper to run. So, by 1936, the last chain boat stopped its journey, and this special way of traveling became a part of history.
