Meet the Whales and Dolphins!

Cetaceans are super cool animals that live in the ocean. They include all the whales, dolphins, and porpoises you can imagine! Even though they live in water, they are mammals, just like us. This means they breathe air with lungs, have warm blood, and the mothers feed their babies milk. They have smooth skin and powerful tails called flukes to swim super fast.

Where Do They Call Home?

Cetaceans live in oceans all around the world, from the icy Arctic waters to the warm tropical seas. Some, like the blue whale, travel huge distances every year. Others, like the bottlenose dolphin, might stay in one area. They can be found near the coast, in the deep open ocean, and even in some rivers!

What's on the Menu?

What do these ocean giants eat? It depends on the type of cetacean! Some, like the baleen whales (think blue whales and humpbacks), have special filters in their mouths called baleen. They gulp huge amounts of water and then push it out, trapping tiny krill and fish. Others, like dolphins and toothed whales, have teeth and hunt for fish, squid, and even other sea creatures!

Super Swimmers of the Sea!

Did you know some whales are as long as a school bus? The blue whale is the biggest animal ever to live on Earth! They can weigh as much as 200 elephants! Dolphins are much smaller but are super smart and playful, often seen leaping out of the water. They use sounds to talk to each other and find food.
