Meet Cecil Rhodes!

Imagine a boy named Cecil who wasn't feeling very well. When he was 16, his family sent him all the way to South Africa because they thought the warm weather would help him get better. While he was there, he got really interested in shiny diamonds!

He started buying up diamond mines and became super rich. He was so successful that he even started his own company, De Beers, which is still famous for diamonds today!

Building New Places

Cecil Rhodes didn't just collect diamonds; he also helped create new places. He and his company started a big territory in southern Africa that they named Rhodesia, after himself. This land is now two countries called Zimbabwe and Zambia! He also dreamed of building a super long train track that would go all the way from the very bottom of Africa to the very top, all through British land.

Even though Cecil Rhodes made a lot of money, he also wanted to help others learn. He set up something called the Rhodes Scholarship. This is a special award that helps bright students from all over the world go to a very old and famous university in England called Oxford.
