Cave

Imagine a secret room hidden deep beneath your feet! That's kind of what a cave is. Caves are natural holes or tunnels in the ground, like giant underground bedrooms. They can be small, just big enough to crawl into, or so huge that a whole school bus could fit inside! These amazing places are made by nature over a very, very long time, often by water slowly wearing away rock.

Caves are like nature's sculptures, carved out by water! Over thousands of years, rain and rivers can seep into cracks in rocks. This water carries tiny bits of rock and minerals, slowly making the cracks bigger and bigger.

Eventually, these tunnels can grow into large caverns. Some caves are like shallow porches, called rock shelters, while others go super deep underground, much deeper than you can see!

Even though caves are dark, many creatures call them home! Bats love to sleep upside down in caves, and some bugs and even fish can live in the water found inside. For humans, caves have been super important for a long, long time. People used them for shelter from the weather and from wild animals, like a cozy, safe house. They are like ancient hiding spots!

People who love exploring caves are called speleologists. They use special lights to see in the dark and carefully study everything inside. Exploring caves is called caving or spelunking. It's like an adventure into a hidden world! Scientists learn a lot from caves about how the Earth has changed over millions of years, like reading a giant history book made of rock.
