Sweden's Super King!

Imagine being a king! Carl XVI Gustaf is the King of Sweden, and he's been king for a super long time – over 50 years! That's longer than your parents have been alive, and even longer than your grandparents!

He was born a prince, but when his grandfather became king, Carl Gustaf became the heir. He became king when he was 27 years old. He has a wife, Queen Silvia, and three children: Victoria, Carl Philip, and Madeleine.

A Royal Family Tree

Carl Gustaf was born a long, long time ago, in 1946. His great-grandfather was also a king! Sadly, when Carl Gustaf was just a tiny baby, only nine months old, his father passed away. This meant he became very important in the royal family. When he was four, his grandfather became king, and Carl Gustaf became the next in line to be king. It’s like being the first person in line for the best toy!

King, But With Different Rules!

When Carl Gustaf became king, something interesting happened. Sweden made new rules for the country. These rules meant the king didn't have to do all the bossy jobs anymore, like picking the prime minister or signing laws. Instead, his job is to be a friendly face for Sweden, wave to people, and attend important events. He still gets to hear about what’s happening in the country, though!

King's Big Day!

In 1976, King Carl Gustaf married the lovely Queen Silvia. They have three children. The oldest is Princess Victoria, and guess what? She is the next queen of Sweden! This is because Sweden changed its rules so that the oldest child, whether a boy or a girl, becomes the heir. Before that, it was usually the oldest boy. So, Princess Victoria is super important for Sweden's future!
