Britons: The Ancient People of Britain!

Long, long ago, before castles and even before the Romans came to Britain, lived a group of people called the Britons. They were Celts, which means they shared a similar language and culture with other groups across Europe. These weren't just simple villagers; they were skilled farmers, brave warriors, and clever craftspeople.

They lived in tribes, like big families, and each tribe had its own leader. They built round houses and sometimes lived in big forts on top of hills called hillforts. It was a very different world back then!

Life for the ancient Britons was all about the land and their community. They grew crops like wheat and barley and raised animals like sheep and cattle. They were also amazing at making things!

They could weave wool into cloth for their clothes and make beautiful jewelry out of metal, like bronze and gold. Imagine wearing a shiny bronze bracelet that someone made with their own hands hundreds of years ago! They loved music too, playing instruments like harps and pipes.

It sounds like they had fun!

Around 2,000 years ago, something big happened: the Romans arrived! They were like a super-powerful army from a faraway land. At first, the Britons fought back bravely, but eventually, the Romans took control of much of Britain.

The Romans brought new ideas, like building straight roads and stone towns, and even introduced new foods and ways of living. But the Britons didn't just disappear. They learned from the Romans, and their Celtic culture mixed with Roman ways, creating something new.

Even though the ancient Britons lived so long ago, we can still see their influence today! Many of the places in Britain have names that come from the Celtic language they spoke. Think about the beautiful landscapes and the ancient ruins of hillforts that still stand.

Their stories and traditions have been passed down through time. They were the first people to really shape Britain into the place it is today, and their spirit is still a part of its history.
