Key Facts
What Was British Togoland?
British Togoland was a special piece of land in West Africa. It wasn't a country on its own for very long. It was actually created when a bigger area called Togoland was divided up. One part became French Togoland, and the other became British Togoland. Think of it like sharing a big toy with a friend, but instead of a toy, it was land!
How Did It Become British?
During a big fight called World War I, the land of Togoland was split. The British took charge of one part, and the French took the other. So, British Togoland was officially put under British rule in 1922. It was like a special assignment for the British to look after this land and its people for a while.
A Big Decision Day!
Later on, the people living in British Togoland got to make a super important choice. They had a vote, like in school elections, to decide what should happen next. Most people voted to join with a nearby place called the Gold Coast, which was getting ready to become its own country. It was a big moment for everyone living there!
Becoming Part of Ghana!
So, in 1957, British Togoland officially joined with the Gold Coast. Together, they became the brand new country of Ghana! The part of British Togoland that joined Ghana is now called the Volta Region. Its old capital city, Ho, is still the capital of the Volta Region today. It's like a piece of a puzzle fitting perfectly into a new picture.
