Berlin is a super big city, like a giant playground for grown-ups! It's the capital of Germany, a country in Europe. Think of it as the main boss city. It has lots of buildings and streets where people live and work. During World War II, this busy city became a target for airplanes dropping bombs.
When the Sky Rained Bombs!
From 1940 to 1945, for many years, airplanes flew over Berlin and dropped bombs. It wasn't just one or two planes, but lots of them! British planes dropped so many bombs, it would fill up about 900 school buses! American planes dropped almost half that amount. It was a very dangerous time for everyone living there.
People Had to Leave Their Homes!
Because it was so scary with bombs falling, many people decided to leave Berlin. They wanted to find safer places to live. Imagine having to pack your bags and leave your house because of danger! By the end of the war, a huge number of people, almost half of everyone living there, had left the city to stay safe.
The War Changed Everything
The bombing of Berlin was a big part of World War II. It showed how much damage bombs could do to a city. After the war ended, people had to rebuild their homes and their lives. It took a very long time to make Berlin feel like a safe and happy place again for everyone.
