Who is This Big Guy?
Bluto is a super strong, grumpy character who often gets in the way of Popeye the Sailor Man! He's really big and likes to be the boss. Sometimes he's called Brutus, but he's always up to no good. He first showed up in a comic strip a super long time ago, in 1932! Imagine a character so strong he could lift a whole playground! That's kind of like Bluto, but he uses his strength to be a bully.
Where Did Bluto Come From?
Bluto wasn't always in cartoons! He started his life in a comic strip called Thimble Theatre, which later became the Popeye comic strip. The person who drew him, Elzie Crisler Segar, made him for just one day, but he was so popular that he stayed! The next year, he was brought to life in animated cartoons, which is how many people know him today. He's been a cartoon star for almost 100 years!
Why Bluto is So Famous!
Bluto is famous because he's the perfect bad guy for Popeye! He's always trying to stop Popeye from getting what he wants, especially Olive Oyl. When Popeye eats his spinach, he gets super strong and can beat Bluto. This makes for exciting stories that kids love to watch. Bluto's big muscles and loud grumbles make him a memorable character that everyone recognizes.
