Bildungsbürgertum

Long ago, in Germany, there was a special group of people called the Bildungsbürgertum. They weren't rich lords or poor farmers, but smart middle-class folks who loved to read, learn, and think. They believed that learning all sorts of things, like history, art, and ideas, was super important.

They were like the trendsetters of their time, influencing what people thought was cool and how they should behave. It was a small group, making up only about one out of every 100 people!

These smart people started showing up around the 1750s. They were often Protestants and worked in important jobs like being lawyers, writers, or in the government. A very wise person named Wilhelm von Humboldt thought that learning should be a lifelong adventure, not just about getting a job.

He believed knowing a little bit about everything was better than just knowing one thing really well. This idea made the Bildungsbürgertum special, as they were always curious and wanted to understand the world around them.

The Bildungsbürgertum were like the wise guides of their time. They helped shape what people talked about in art and how they acted. Even though they were a small group, their ideas spread.

They believed in learning for learning's sake, which is a pretty amazing idea! They were like the original influencers, but instead of showing off toys, they shared knowledge and encouraged others to think deeply about the world.

As time went on, things changed. Factories started popping up, and cities grew bigger. People began needing to learn very specific skills for jobs.

Sadly, some of the Bildungsbürgertum started to think their smartness made them better than others, and they forgot the joy of learning for everyone. Then, a big, sad war called World War I happened, and it really shook up their world. Many of them lost a lot, and their influence faded away.
