Pope Benedict XV

Imagine a very important leader, like the principal of a giant school for the whole world! That was Pope Benedict XV. He was born a long, long time ago, in 1854. He became the Pope in 1914, which was a very sad time because a giant war called World War I had just started. He wanted everyone to be friends again and tried his best to make peace.

When Pope Benedict XV became Pope, Europe was like a playground where everyone was fighting. He called the war 'the suicide of civilized Europe,' which means he thought it was a really, really bad idea that would hurt everyone. He tried to talk to the leaders of the countries fighting, like a grown-up trying to stop kids from arguing, but sadly, they didn't listen to his ideas for peace.

Even though he couldn't stop the big war, Pope Benedict XV was super kind. He helped people who were hurt or hungry because of the fighting. He helped prisoners of war, which are like people captured during a game, and made sure they got food and care. He also helped send food to people who needed it. He was like a superhero with a big heart, trying to make things better.

Pope Benedict XV also wanted to share his faith with people all over the world. He asked Catholics everywhere to help spread the good news. Because he cared so much about this, people called him the 'Pope of Missions.' He also loved the Virgin Mary very much and made sure there was a special day to celebrate her.
