A City Born on the River!

Bangui wasn't always a city. A long, long time ago, French explorers built a special camp there in 1889. They named it after the river, the Ubangi. The river got its name from the Bobangi people who lived there, and they called the noisy, bubbly parts of the river 'rapids'. So, Bangui means 'place by the rapids'! It's a city that grew right out of the river's edge.
