Meet the Wobbly Wonder!

Imagine a stretchy bag that can hold air, or even lighter-than-air gas! That's a balloon. They can be round, long, or even shaped like animals. When you fill them up, they get bigger and bigger. Some balloons are made of bouncy rubber, like the ones you play with at parties. Others are made of shiny, crinkly material. They are super fun to watch float up, up, up!

From Animal Bags to Party Pals!

Long, long ago, before rubber was invented, people made balloons from dried animal bladders, like from a pig! Can you imagine? Then, a super smart scientist named Michael Faraday invented the rubber balloon in 1824.

He used them to do experiments with gases in his lab. Now, balloons are made from all sorts of materials and come in every color you can dream of. They've come a long way from pig bladders!

Why Balloons Are So Cool!

Balloons are special because they are light and can float! This makes them great for decorations at parties and celebrations. But they do more than just look pretty! Some balloons are sent high into the sky to help scientists study the weather. Others are used in hospitals to help doctors. Their lightness and ability to carry things make them useful for lots of jobs.

How Do They Get So Big?

Balloons get big because they are filled with a gas. You can blow them up with your own breath, which is mostly air. Or, you can fill them with a special gas called helium. Helium is lighter than air, which is why helium balloons float up! The gas pushes out on the stretchy sides of the balloon, making it expand and get round and full.
