Assen

Imagine a map of Europe, and then zoom into the Netherlands, a country shaped like a boot! Assen is in the northeastern part of this boot. It's the capital, like the main boss, of a region called Drenthe. Think of Drenthe as a big neighborhood, and Assen is the biggest house in that neighborhood. It's a place where people live, work, and play, with lots of green spaces to explore.

Assen wasn't always a big city! A long, long time ago, it was just a small village. But people liked living there, and it grew bigger and bigger. In 1809, which is over 200 years ago, Assen officially became a city! That means it got special city rights, like a special badge of honor. It’s like when you get a new sticker for doing a great job at school, but for a whole town!

Assen is super famous for something really exciting: motorcycle racing! There's a special track called the TT Circuit Assen where brave racers zoom around on their bikes. Every year, on the last Sunday of June, there's a huge race called the Dutch TT.

It's like the biggest race of the year! Assen also loves to dance with its annual Assen Dance Festival, where people celebrate with music and moves.

Guess what? Assen is so good at being environmentally friendly that it won a special award! In 2027, it was named the European Green Leaf winner. This means Assen is really good at taking care of nature, keeping its air clean, and making sure its parks and trees are healthy. It’s a city that cares about our planet, which is super important for everyone!
