Key Facts
Meet the Krill Crew!
Antarctic krill are like tiny, swimming shrimp that live in the super cold waters around Antarctica. They are so small, you could fit about 10 of them on your fingernail! But don't let their size fool you, because they are super important.
They live in huge groups called swarms, and sometimes these swarms are so big, they look like a fuzzy carpet in the ocean. They are amazing swimmers and love to hang out together.
What's for Dinner?
Krill are super picky eaters! They only munch on tiny, tiny plants that float in the ocean called phytoplankton. These plants get their energy from the sun, just like plants on land. So, krill are like little solar-powered snacks for the ocean! They use their special little arms to scoop up these tiny plants. It's like they are always having a tiny salad party in the sea.
A Krill's Life Story
A krill can live for up to six years, which is a really long time for such a small creature! Imagine a tiny shrimp living longer than your pet hamster! They grow to be about as long as your finger, which is about 6 centimeters. Even though they are small, there are SO many of them. If you could weigh all the krill in the ocean, it would be more than all the elephants on Earth put together! Wow!
Why Krill are Ocean Heroes!
Krill are like the most popular kids in the Antarctic ocean! Big animals like whales, seals, and penguins LOVE to eat krill. They are a super important food source for them. Without krill, these big animals wouldn't have enough to eat. So, even though they are tiny, krill are like the superheroes of the ocean, making sure everyone else gets to eat and stay healthy.
