Key Facts
Who Was This Awesome Explorer?
Imagine a super-smart detective who loved to solve mysteries about our planet! That was Andrija Mohorovičić. He was born a long, long time ago, in 1857, in a country called Croatia.
Andrija wasn't an explorer who climbed mountains or sailed seas. Instead, he explored the Earth by studying something invisible: earthquakes! He was like a doctor for the Earth, listening to its rumbles and figuring out its secrets.
Listening to Earth's Secret Whispers!
Andrija used special tools called seismographs to listen to earthquakes. These machines are like super-sensitive ears that can feel even the tiniest shake from far away. When an earthquake happens, it sends out waves, like ripples in a pond.
Andrija noticed that these waves traveled differently through different parts of the Earth. It was like he heard two different sounds coming from the same earthquake!
A Big Discovery Under Our Feet!
Andrija figured out that there's a special boundary, like an invisible line, deep inside the Earth. This line separates the rocky outer shell of the Earth from the hotter, gooey layer underneath. He discovered this amazing boundary, and scientists today call it the Mohorovičić discontinuity, or 'Moho' for short! It’s like finding a secret door to a hidden room inside our planet.
Why Andrija is a Star!
Because Andrija was so clever at understanding earthquakes and the Earth's insides, he is known as one of the first scientists to really understand how our planet works. His discovery of the 'Moho' helped scientists learn so much more about what the Earth is made of, way down below where we live. He showed us that even though we can't see it, there's a whole lot going on beneath our feet!
