Anthropogenic pressures are the primary drivers of this vulnerability. Incidental capture in fishing gear, known as bycatch, is a major threat, leading to numerous dolphin deaths each year.
Direct hunting also occurs, with dolphins sometimes killed for use as fishing bait or for predator control. The extensive damming of rivers disrupts their habitats, fragments populations, and impedes migration.
