Alofi: Niue's Tiny Capital

Alofi is the capital city of a faraway island nation called Niue. Imagine a tiny dot in the big blue Pacific Ocean! Niue is a very small country, and Alofi is its main town. It's so small that it's made up of just two villages: Alofi North and Alofi South. Think of it like having two neighborhoods that together are the whole capital city!

Alofi is a very special capital because it's not very big at all. In 2022, only about 610 people lived there. That's fewer people than might be in your school! It's actually the second-smallest capital city in the whole world. Even though it's small, it has important buildings for the government of Niue.

Sometimes, big storms called cyclones can happen in places like Niue. A very strong storm named Cyclone Heta came through a while ago. It was so strong that it damaged many of the government buildings. After the storm, they decided to move lots of the important government offices to Alofi South, so it became even more of the main part of the capital.

Even though Alofi is the capital, life there is pretty quiet and peaceful. People live in villages, and the government buildings are there too. It's a place where everyone knows each other because it's so small. It's a unique capital because it feels more like a friendly village than a busy city.
