Al-Zahrawi

Imagine a doctor who lived over a thousand years ago! That was Al-Zahrawi. He was a brilliant physician, which means he was a doctor, and also a surgeon, who could perform operations. He lived in a place called al-Andalus, which is now part of Spain and Portugal. People thought he was one of the greatest surgeons ever, like a superhero of medicine!

Al-Zahrawi wrote a giant book with 30 parts, like 30 chapters in a super-long story! It was called Kitab al-Tasrif. The most exciting part was all about surgery. This part was so good that people in Europe translated it into their language and used it as their main surgery book for 500 years! That's longer than your grandparents' grandparents have been alive!

Al-Zahrawi didn't just know a lot; he invented things! He created special tools that surgeons still use today to help people get better. He even figured out how to use a special kind of thread, called catgut, to sew up cuts inside people's bodies. He also designed tools for operations like C-sections and for fixing eyes with cataracts.

This clever doctor was the first to understand that some sicknesses can be passed down from parents to children, like a family secret. He also learned about a very dangerous problem where a baby starts to grow outside the main part of the mother's body. He even discovered why some people can't move their bodies properly, which is called paralysis.
