Meet the Giant Mountains!

The Adirondack Mountains are like a huge, lumpy crown in northeastern New York. They spread out for about 160 miles, which is like driving from your house to a faraway city! This giant area is home to over 100 mountain tops, with Mount Marcy being the tallest.

It's so high, it's like stacking 10 school buses on top of each other! There are also more than 200 sparkly lakes, perfect for swimming and boating.

Old Rocks, New Mountains!

Even though these mountains look strong and new, their rocks are super, super old โ€“ over 1 billion years old! That's older than dinosaurs! Scientists say these mountains are like a puzzle.

They were shaped by giant ice sheets, like enormous bulldozers, during times called glaciation. It's like getting brand new mountains made from ancient building blocks. They are even slowly growing taller, like a sleepy giant stretching!

A Park Fit for a King (or Queen!)

Almost all of the Adirondack Mountains are inside a giant protected area called Adirondack Park. It's bigger than many states and was made to keep the forests, lakes, and mountains safe. This means lots of animals can live there, and people can visit to hike, camp, and enjoy nature. It's like a giant nature playground that everyone helps take care of.

Adventures in the Wild!

People love visiting the Adirondacks for fun! There are special groups of mountains called the High Peaks that hikers love to climb. Imagine climbing a mountain that's taller than a 10-story building! There are also over 1,200 miles of rivers, which is like the distance from New York to Florida! You can go kayaking, fishing, or just enjoy the beautiful views.
