Turn Off for Mount Marcy Trail

Key Facts
Meet the Giant of New York!
Mount Marcy is the super-tallest point in New York State, reaching way up to 5,343 feet! Imagine a mountain that's taller than 50 giraffes stacked on top of each other. It's located in a special wild place called the Adirondack Park.
This giant mountain was shaped by huge ice sheets, like giant bulldozers, that moved across the land a super long time ago. They left behind big rocks and carved out valleys. At the very top, it's rocky and has tiny plants that can live in cold, windy places.
Ice Giants and Tiny Lakes
A long, long time ago, giant glaciers, which are like rivers of ice, covered Mount Marcy. These ice giants were so powerful they pushed huge boulders around and carved out deep valleys. One special spot carved by the ice is a tiny lake called Lake Tear of the Clouds.
It's like a little teardrop high up on the mountain! This tiny lake is super important because it's one of the very first places where the famous Hudson River starts its long journey all the way to the ocean.
Forests and Rocky Peaks
Most of Mount Marcy is covered in thick forests with trees like hardwood and spruce. But as you get closer to the very top, the trees stop growing! The highest part is above the 'tree line,' which means it's too cold and windy for trees.
Instead, you'll find lots of rocks, colorful lichens (which look like moss but are actually a mix of fungus and algae), and small, tough alpine plants that can survive the harsh weather. It's a very different world up there!
A Famous Mountain Adventure
People love to hike up Mount Marcy because it's the highest point and has amazing views. The most popular path is called the Van Hoevenberg Trail. A long time ago, in 1837, a group of explorers were the first to officially climb to the top.
Later, a very famous president named Theodore Roosevelt climbed Mount Marcy with his family. While coming down, he found out he was going to be the President of the United States! It's a mountain full of history and adventure.
