Key Facts
America's Big Vote Day!
On November 7, 2000, grown-ups all over the United States got to vote for who they wanted to be the next president. It was a super important day! Two main teams were running: George W. Bush and his friend Dick Cheney, and Al Gore and his friend Joe Lieberman. Everyone was watching to see who would get the most votes to lead the country.
A Race Too Close to Call!
This election was like a nail-biting soccer game where the score is tied until the very last second! It was so close that nobody knew who won on voting night. The state of Florida had a lot of votes that were super, super close. It took over a month, with lots of counting and checking, to figure out who really won.
The Winner's Surprise!
Guess what? Even though Al Gore got more votes from people all over the country, George W. Bush ended up winning the election! This happened because of something called electoral votes. It was like winning the popular vote was good, but winning the electoral vote was the ticket to becoming president. This was a super rare thing to happen!
Who's Who in the Race?
George W. Bush was the son of a former president, like a president's kid! Al Gore was the Vice President, which is like the president's main helper. They both talked a lot about important things like jobs and helping people. It was a big decision for the country!
